Dr. A. B. R. Desai is responsible for spreading awareness about the benefits of surgery for hearing loss in the smaller metros. The first Deafness Camp in India was held in Bhavnagar ( Gujarat ) in 1963. The first Deafness Camp in Maharashtra was held in Pune in 1965. The first Deafness Clinic at the V.S. Hospital was established in Ahmedabad in 1963. The first Deafness Clinic at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad was established in 1963. The first Deafness Clinic at the S.S.G. Hospital in Baroda was established in 1963. In addition, Dr. A. B. R. Desai was the first surgeon to hold many Deafness Camps all over India including Calcutta , Ludhiana , Jamnagar & Rajkot. He was in charge of a separate Deafness Clinic at Nanavati, Bhatia, Jaslok & Bombay Hospitals in Bombay. He has performed the first Trans-antral Vidian Neurectomy in India in 1961. He has performed the first Teflon Piston operation in 1963. He is the only surgeon to perform the Posterior Crus on Perichondrium Technique (Dr. Hough) in India . This is the only surgery that is anatomically correct & is the safest for surgery in the second ear.
